21,590m ascent?

Benoit at osa-ultratrail reported this morning his estimations of the PTL characteristics calcuted according to the GPS trace provided by the UTMB organisation. The PTL would then feature 245km and an incredible 21,590m of ascent this year... That's nearly 2.5 times the Everest, 4.5 times the Mont-Blanc or 20 times Snowdon... It comes a bit as a surprise as the official page reads an estimated 18,000m. Well, I guess we'll have to work hard on ascents repetitions...

The Chameleons are in!

The results of the draw to enter La Petite Trotte à Léon (Léon's short stroll) are out: our team is in! It looks like there were only about 60 teams for 60 tickets anyway...

In case you missed what the PTL is, this is a kind of super-UTMB of approx. 250km (6 marathons) with 18,000m of ascent. This is 90km longer than the regular UTMB, but there's twice as much ascent - 18,000m is quite frankly huge!

The PTL's philosophy is a bit different from the UTMB's (and sister races). It's to be completed by teams of 3 runners. I've teamed up with Sven, a French mate living in London and Leo, a British runner from Oxfordshire and twice UTMB finisher to form "The Chameleons". We'll have about 4 to 5 days to complete the loop. There will be virtually no road section on the route, but there will be loads of high mountain paths (up to 3000m) that are much more technical than the rather easy TMB hiking path. There won't be any assistance and the route won't even be marked. It's in total autonomy, and that's why we'll have to carry a bivouac tent.

Because it's so long, we'll have to sleep (a bit) and I'm not sure how it'll feel after 2 or 3 days... I guess it will be more a fast hike rather than a run.

Now we've got to start training for it!

Petite Trotte à Léon: looking for a team

As you may know I'm considering to attempt to run the "Petite Trotte à Léon" with Sven in 2009. This is a kind of super-UTMB, but with much less people. 250km +18,000m ascent on high-mountain terrain in less than 100 hours by teams of 3, including 2 UTMB finishers.

We're looking for a UTMB finisher with a similar pace to ours, ie. UTMB finishers in around 30 to 40h, although this event will involve more walking and less running I suppose. Our aim is to enjoy the views and to finish - no stress. As we'll need to train together, it's necessary for our running mate to live in mainland UK.

I've been asking around a bit these days, but it's not that easy to find, although there is a fairly big "market" if you look at the UTMB forum. This morning, 5 out of 6 threads on the first page of the forum were seeking for race partners in French, German and English.

La Petite Trotte à Léon

Updated 02/10/2007

The UTMB organisers announced they might organise a new race ironically called "La Petite Trotte à Léon" - Léon's short stroll ... Léon referring to Mr. Lovey, deputy president of "Les Trailers du Mont-Blanc" and initiator of this idea.

It would be a super-TMB of 220km with 17,000m of ascent to be done by teams of 3 in less than 4 days (25th to 28th August). The number of teams may be very limited (50) and would be restricted exclusively to former UTMB finishers. Teams couldn't split up. A map would be provided, but the route wouldn't be marked, and would include less than 5km on roads. Compulsory rest of 4 hours in a row every day in the refuges, where some food would be provided (and only there). Every team would carry a bivouac tent. No ranking at the end.

It seems really tempting to be honest ...
